IN THE THIRD PETS+ COVID-19 Impact Survey, we focused on the segment of the pet industry most impacted by government restrictions: grooming salons and grooming departments in pet stores.

We asked, “If you have self-wash stations, have you reopened them?” The top response was “No” at 58 percent, with those responding “Yes” at 22 percent. The remainder skipped the question on the survey as not applicable.

Teresa Hogge of Belly Rubs N Suds, Ashburn, VA, has not reopened hers, and said, “I’m considering removing the self-wash and turning the space into additional grooming stations. We are normally booked out three to four weeks, and now we are booked out seven weeks. The revenue potential is greater if I remove the self-wash.”

Jeff Jensen of Four Muddy Paws in St Louis, MO, also has not reopened self-wash. “We’re opening in phases, and our self-serve wash will re-open after we’ve had a couple weeks of customers in the shop browsing. Trying to manage our online curbside pickup and delivery orders with in-store browsing before we add another service like our self-service wash.”

Charlsye Lewis of Metro Animals in Fort Worth, TX, has kept her self-wash stations closed by order of the city.

And Pattie Zeller of Animal Connection in Charlottesville, VA, has reopened but said, “We have two stations, but we allow one to be used at a time.”
